June 14: Excursiones Baelo Claudia y Vejer de la Frontera

We met with Rosa for classes this morning at Salesianas before leaving Cádiz for an afternoon of excursions through the towns of Baelo Claudia and Vejer de la Frontera. After finishing classes around 1:00 p.m, we met Álvaro outside of our school and quickly boarded a bus for the 90-minute trip to Baelo Claudia, a Roman archaeological site near the beach town of Bolonia. Álvaro walked us through the ruins pointing out the theater, temples, baths, and the ancient tanks in which the Romans salted fish for exportation throughout the empire. It was a beautiful, clear day and we could see the city of Tangier, in Africa, across the water.

After visiting Baelo Claudia, we drove to Vejer de la Frontera, one of Andalucía’s most beautiful “pueblos blancos,” or white villages, named for the white lime walls that the villages in the region have. Álvaro gave us a brief tour of Vejer, finishing in Plaza de España, which has an ornate fountain in the center. We then had about an hour and a half to explore the town, get something to drink, and go shopping. We returned to Cádiz a little before 9:00 p.m. so we could go home and get ready for our weekend trip to Granada.
